Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance Announces New Director

Following the announcement of current Director Phillip Banks’ departure from the GMSH, the Ontario AIDS Network is delighted to announce the appointment of Dane Griffiths as the new Director effective April 1, 2020. Dane steps into the role following five years of service within the organization—most recently as Associate Director and previously as the Acting Director for 1.5 years.
“We’re very pleased to announce the appointment of Dane to the role of Director at the GMSH. Dane is a thoughtful and strategic leader and has demonstrated his commitment to the health of 2SGBTQ men over the past five years. I’m sure he will successfully lead the GMSH to meet its critical role in Ontario’s HIV sector and that his work will lead to improved health outcomes for 2SGBTQ men.
“The OAN would also like to offer our profound thanks to Phillip Banks for his leadership over the past two years. His vision and commitment to the work of the GMSH has been transformative and we wish him the best as he takes the next steps in his career.”  —Shannon Ryan, Executive Director of the OAN.

Phillip Banks will be stepping down as Director of the GMSH at the end of this month. After a career in Canada’s HIV and gay men’s health response spanning nearly 30 years, he's stepping away to nurture new directions in his personal and professional life. Phillip has been instrumental in his time as Director, and he will be missed by the team and all who have had a chance to work with him. Phillip brought a considerable vision to the role, ensuring that the GMSH delivered on its important mandate in Ontario. Most notably, he has fostered new partnerships with organizations and community stakeholders working to advance the health of 2SGBTQ men that have historically been underrepresented in the HIV response.

“Thank you to the HIV sector in Ontario. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a sector filled with amazing people doing life-changing work. The team at the GMSH is passionate and committed with each individual bringing unique gifts. It has been an honour to be a part of this group. My time at the GMSH has offered me the opportunity to see what is possible through collaboration and focus in Ontario’s response to HIV among 2SGBQT men. The GMSH is an invaluable resource for strengthening the sexual health of our communities and for supporting individuals carrying out this work on the front lines. I wish the Alliance the best and I know the GMSH is in good hands with Dane and the rest of the team.” —Phillip Banks, outgoing Director, GMSH

We are very thankful for his leadership and his involvement over the years and are excited as he embarks on this next chapter.
Dane Griffiths brings with him nearly a decade of experience working in the Ontario response to 2SGBTQ men’s sexual health promotion. He has played a leadership role in the development of large-scale social marketing campaigns like The Sex You Want. Most recently, he has been raising the profile of the GMSH within international networks of advocates to advance responses to Party 'n Play/ Chemsex. The GMSH team, alongside the Ministry of Health and Alliance partners, recently developed priority areas of focus, including HIV/STBBI testing, nPeP/PrEP, online outreach & communications, and harm reduction in the context of sexualized drug use. Dane will play a critical role in continuing to advance those shared interests.

“I am humbled to be following the path laid by strong advocates like Owen McEwen and Phillip Banks. The GMSH has been a place of growth for me and I hope that I can impart those same values and learnings for our small and dedicated team.” —Dane Griffiths, incoming Director, GMSH

This transition marks another milestone in the GMSH journey to be a leading voice for 2SGBTQ men in Ontario’s HIV response. We’re confident that under Dane’s steady leadership, the GMSH will continue to play an essential role in partnership with its many stakeholders to advance shared interests that benefit communities of 2SGBTQ men across the province.

Please join us in welcoming Dane and thanking Phillip!
